چکیده

The Earth Clouds, Aerosols and Radiation Explorer, EarthCARE, has been selected for implementation as the sixth Earth Explorer Mission of the European Space Agency’s Living Planet Programme [1]. The mission will measure three-dimensional structures of clouds and aerosols simultaneously with the respective outgoing broad band flux. These measurements would significantly contribute to the understanding of key parameters in the Earth radiation budget and quantify the impact of clouds and aerosols on radiation and flux. With this, EarthCARE would provide crucial data for the improvement of clouds and aerosols parameterisation in climate models and would furthermore contribute to improvements of numerical weather prediction [4]. With a target launch date in 2012, the mission would also provide data similar to ATrain missions CloudSAT and CALIPSO, thus supplementing and continuing their respective data sets of lidar and radar observations.

New approaches to quantifying aerosol influence on the cloud radiative effect.

The topic of cloud radiative forcing associated with the atmospheric aerosol has been the focus of intense scrutiny for decades. The enormity of the problem is reflected in the need to understand aspects such as aerosol composition, optical properties, cloud condensation, and ice nucleation potential, along with the global distribution of these properties, controlled by emissions, transport, tr...

A New Pathway for Absorbing Aerosols’ Influence on the Interannual Variability of the South Asian Monsoon

Aerosol forcing remains the dominant uncertainty and a challenging problem in climate change scenarios. While it is widely documented that anthropogenic activities have significantly contributed to raising the global aerosol concentration in the troposphere, quantification of the influence of tropospheric aerosols on climate has proved difficult because of the large spatial and temporal variabi...

Study of Aerosol/Cloud/Radiation Interactions Over the Atmospheric Radiation Measurement Program Southern Great Plain Site

While considerable advances in the understanding of atmospheric processes and feedbacks in the climate system have led to a better representation of these mechanisms in general circulation models, the greatest uncertainty in predictability of future climate arises from clouds and their interactions with radiation. To explore this uncertainty, the cloud resolving model has evolved as one of the ...

Towards Optimal Aerosol Information for the Retrieval of Solar Surface Radiation Using Heliosat

High quality data of surface radiation is a prerequisite for climate monitoring (Earth radiation budget) and solar energy applications. A very common method to derive solar surface irradiance is the Heliosat method, a one channel approach for the retrieval of the effective cloud albedo (CAL). This information is then used to derive the solar surface irradiance by application of a clear sky mode...

The Role of Aerosol-Cloud-Radiation Interactions in Regional Air Quality—A NU-WRF Study over the United States

This work assessed the impact of aerosol-cloud-radiation (ACR) interactions on U.S. regional ozone and PM2.5 using the NASA Unified Weather Research and Forecasting modeling system. A series of three-month simulations have been carried out for the year 2010, in which the factor separation method has been applied in order to isolate the contributions from aerosol-radiation (AR), aerosol-cloud (A...

New understanding and quantification of the regime dependence of aerosol-cloud interaction for studying aerosol indirect effects

Aerosol indirect effects suffer from large uncertainty in climate models and among observations. This study focuses on two plausible factors: regime dependence of aerosol-cloud interactions and the effect of cloud droplet spectral shape. We show, using a new parcel model, that combined consideration of droplet number concentration (Nc) and relative dispersion (ε, ratio of standard deviation to ...
